FORMER chief of the South African Navy Vice-Admiral Lambert "Woody" Woodburne, who has died in Cape Town at the age of 73, was the joint commander of South Africa's most daring mission since World War 2.
In 1972 he captained the brand new Emily Hobhouse submarine, which disembarked a six-strong team of special forces operatives under the command of Jan Breytenbach off the coast of Tanzania.
This was during the civil war in Mozambique between the Portuguese colonialists and Frelimo guerrillas, who were being harboured by Julius Nyerere's Tanzanian government. The aim of the operation, during which Breytenbach and his team blew up power lines and bridges, was to cause friction between the Tanzanian government and their Frelimo guests by making it look like this was the work of the guerillas.
