Dr John Magufuli (CCM) becomes the fifth president of Tanzania after defeating Edward Lowassa (Chadema) in a two-horse race. Dr Magufuli, president-elect, garnered 8,882,935 votes, giving him a 58.46 per cent lead in a race. he defeated other seven hopefuls who were also eyeing the country's top office.
His nearest opponent, Lowassa pocketed 6,072,848 votes which equals to 39.97 per cent. However, Lowassa withdrew from the race at eleventh hour saying was the process marred by irregularities—chiefly tallying process.
His agent was missing at final tallying process. National Electoral Commission Chairman (rtd) Judge Damian Lubuva said all parties representative were present at verifying process, except Chadema.
But their absence, according to law, does not bar the process to continue.
