The Beira road has been, and still is, more than a mere highway for traffic, for it is also filled with social life, human history and the flow of ideas and cultures. It has witnessed wars, tragedies, memories, experiences and events. This road is part of my history too, dating back to my earliest trip in 1963 when I travelled to Beira with my parents in a clapped-out old Series 1 Land-Rover; the world around us was certainly different then. Now into my seventh decade, I have stored away many memories and, if I wrote my life story, I would never end; and there are still many miles to go. Many of my reminiscences of the road trips to Beira, seaside holidays, and later working trips to Mozambique will evoke a certain nostalgia for a time and place that once was and still is.
